Blog #1 Introduction & ESTE Standards

Blog #1

Hi! I am J Little. Currently, I work as a reading/writing tutor at a tutoring center in Oklahoma. We

tutor students K-12 in many areas, but my specialty is in using the Wilson Writing Program to help

children who are lagging behind; they are usually 3rd to 8th grade. After having tutored for a while, I

would say third and fourth grade are my favorite student ages to work with. Holding a bachelors in

English from OU and currently working on this masters, I have taught college composition at both OU

and OBU. Objectively, I much prefer the one-on-one engagement of tutoring to teaching an entire class.

This is my favorite job so far, so my plans for the future are to keep doing what I am doing unless

 something new comes up.

3rd Grade Classroom Activity for ISTE Standard 1.a:

Empowered Learner/Learning Goals

ESTE standard 1.a advises that students should select their own learning goals and work to develop the

strategies needed to achieve them through the use of classroom technology. They should also be able to

reflect on that process and learn from it (1.students, 2023). Students in the 3rd grade ELA classroom

could address Oklahoma Standards 3.1L.1, 2; and 3.1.1, 2 (Oklahoma Academic Standards/ Oklahoma

State Department of Education, n.d.) by participating in the development of rules for a storybook activity

that involves students selecting online interactive books to be read by small groups of students and

presented to the rest of the class. Students will list their goals for reading and develop strategies for their

presentations. Student group presentations could involve using a word processor to create a book review

or class newsletter about their story, or they could create a picture power-point of the story while they

narrate. After the presentations are finished, the class can trouble-shoot and discuss changes they would

make for their next presentation. They could then select one presentation to share with another class either

in person or over the internet. The rule development, group discussion of the book, and group discussion

of their strategies for presentation all serve to meet the goals ESTE 1.a.

Triple E Framework by Dr. Liz Kolb

Dr. Kolb explains that there is no “magic bullet” for learning, but that every lesson and activity needs

strategies that engage, enhance, and extend learning in the classroom (Triple E Framework, n.d.).

Some of the instructional strategies from the Triple E Framework that could help in this classroom

 activity are enumerated here.

Engagement
1. The teacher could do a guided practice by having the entire class watch an interactive online story together and discuss various was it could be presented to another class. This would allow the teacher to model thinking and model navigation of the tool.
Enhancement
2. Students should be practicing active listening while they decide on the rules for the activity, listen to the stories, and listen to the other groups' presentations. They can participate in predicting how their presentations will turn out. At the end of the class presentations, the students will participate in self-reflective practices as they verbally tweak the activity for next time.
Extension
3. After the class shares their presentation with another classroom community—whether in person or through the internet—they will be engaging in authentic discourse with others as they discuss their storybook presentations.

  1. I like your idea with online books. This assignments sounds very engaging and intertwines well with the Oklahoma standard and ESTE standard. I especially like your extension. This is a great way for students to practice presenting.

  2. Hi Jeana!

I think this is a great way to begin having students review what they've learned and put it into words. I know I've used an online tool containing interactive storybooks before, and it was helpful in preparing students for more challenging texts as they struggle with these skills sometimes in the higher grades. Furthermore, the narration sounds like a great component for an activity like this!
    This is great!

  3. Hi Jeana! I love the progression of this lesson. Developing goals, working in groups, presenting ,and reflecting are such great practices to use the classroom to have a student centered classroom. I teach high school and I think that these practices could easily be embedded into any lesson no matter the grade level to ensure students success.
